For over three years I've used Google's Blogspot. They have made several changes this past year and it has become extremely difficult to create an individual blog. Today, without any warning, while working on a message, things changed radically!! I attempted to regain the former format--to no avail. I went to the "help" menu and read everything I could find that applied to my dilemma. There seems to be no immediate resolve so I searched for another place to publish my blog messages. ~~ At first, I'll be experimenting with appearance, etc., (at the new location), and exploring my options. ~~ Bear with me; allow this old lady some latitude. Five squirrels at the same time, several Cardinals, a dozen Doves and The Three Tenors. I've been seated just inside my patio door all morning watching the squirrels, and birds, feed on the feast I've spread for them (and took nineteen pictures). Sadly (for me) the squirrels have not found the new peanut feeder. I want a picture of a squirrel on that feeder!! So I've waited patiently--while listening to The Three Tenors singing Christmas music.

No, I didn't sit by the window all day!! But I was working on "downsizing" projects in the living room and watched the squirrels come and go. Finally, at 3:35, a squirrel stretched full length to examine the contents of that new feeder. Minutes earlier he had enjoyed a drink of water--and I thought he would surely find the peanuts. Over the next half-hour he made numerous trips... and invited his siblings and cousins. There was a parade of my furry friends grabbing a peanut and then running for the trees.

Comment: It required more patience to create this message than waiting on the squirrels!! While working on this... the format changed unexpectedly (not my action). Suddenly there were fewer "tools" available. The worse problem: I lost control of arrangement of the pictures. I wanted these side-by-side.

Ignore the time stamp. I wanted this message to follow "... The Three Tenors."

Shopping spree !!

Yes, I went shopping yesterday. The squirrels needed another seed block in one feeder. Several months ago I found a wonderful place called "Wild Bird Center." At that time, I bought the baffles that stop the squirrel from climbing the Shepherd's hooks (and other purchases). I love to browse their store!! Yesterday, I saw, and purchased, a red dome to shelter a Hummingbird feeder. No Hummingbirds at this time of year but a red dome will help attract them next year. Another red feeder for sunflower seeds but I'll wait... because I already have three feeders (with sunflower seeds) that the birds are already familiar with. I won't open the flat feeder (front & center) until a later date. I may use it for the deer food feeder. Yes, I launched into feeding the deer!! Temporarily, deer food is in a brand-new red "kitty litter" box, with a salt lick, at the edge of lawn/woods. I'm realistic: Raccoons may get to the food before the deer. ~~~~ Comment, 1:30 PM: A squirrel is feasting on goodies in the familiar place. I'm anxious for it to find the whole peanut feeder. Just before 8 o'clock (after that beautiful sunrise), seventeen seniors from the Waxhaw Creek Apartments (where I live) boarded the little JAARS bus en route to Charlotte. Picture number 4 documents that five (or more) of my coworkers (at Vernacular Media) arrived (by car) at approximately the same time. In total, there were more than fifty volunteers from JAARS volunteering at Operation Christmas Child!! Conservatively, there were 200 workers in the receiving area before dividing into smaller groups to see a video and listen to instructions. Then we stood in long lines, single file, before moving to our work station. ~~ Each box went through three or four pair of hands, several steps. ~~ We departed with indelible memories, a T-shirt and a Christmas ornament. ~~ The seniors had lunch at Golden Corral prior to returning to JAARS. ~~ (Left click on a picture to enlarge.)

Squirrel news

The squirrels disappeared for a couple of weeks. I missed them terribly!! I asked questions of longtime residents here at JAARS and was told the squirrels were gathering acorns for the winter--or hibernating. I was thrilled when they reappeared about ten days ago AND put out their food again (packed away). I've had four at one time... recently. You can see that I pamper the squirrels. (I didn't put out the chair with squirrel feeder but scatter corn and sunflower seeds on the patio.) ~~ Check my earlier blog for the complete story regarding my relationship with the cute little critters.

Comment: Even after a phone call to Windstream, I'm still having a problem uploading pictures!! This squirrel picture was the best of ten that I attempted to add to this blog message. I'll keep trying!!

The poem was printed on Elaine Townsend's 1943 prayer card. Elaine Townsend (1915-2007) was the wife of William Cameron Townsend (1896-1982), founder of Wycliffe Bible Translators, JAARS (previously known as Jungle Aviation and Radio Services), SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics), and other organizations.

Productive holiday weekend !!

A productive holiday weekend--but also very frustrating!! I've spent hours attempting to upload images!! I start the upload process and go back to my other project of the hour. Sometimes several hours just to upload one picture; sometimes (after all that time) it isn't a usable image (examples below). I also mentioned this problem in my Thanksgiving Day blog.

On Friday, I assembled a four-shelf free-standing storage (from Sam's Club). I placed the shelves in such a way that I could have two bins on the floor under the bottom shelf. Then I arranged shelf two and three so I could position drawers between them. Now I have a place for my Vita Mix, and Osterizer, and lots of other "storage." (FYI: I already had the plastic containers [bins] and drawers. Not an additional expense.)

Remember my recent lament: "Yipes, where do I put them now that they are out of the box?? More clutter!!" On Saturday, I assembled a three-shelf free-standing stand (from my overabundance of stuff, advertised "for sale" but never sold). I purchased it while living in Shelby and disassembled it before it went into the PODS storage. Before the day was out, I had unpacked my cook books and put them on the shelves. Not that I intend to keep, and use, all those beans, blender, food processor, pressure cooker, salad, vegan, and vegetarian cook books but I need a place to put them while I advertise them for sale (or for give away). So-o-o, over the last several days I have emptied five boxes!! (FYI: My kitchen is quite small, and storage is limited, so I desperately needed the extra storage units.) ~~ I'm now quite pleased with the appearance of the kitchen and would no longer be embarrassed if a guest stepped into my apartment.

Second picture shows the table (originally from the T@B teardrop trailer) in front of the newly assembled storage shelves. I'll need to move the table to get to the items on the shelves BUT this is preferable to things in cardboard boxes!!

I dusted off rusty skills when I set a table for Thanksgiving dinner. Conservatively, it has been approaching ten years since I had guests, and decorated a table!! Upwards to one hundred JAARS family and friends enjoyed a potluck meal (with turkey & dressing), and fellowship. Initially, I signed up to "set up" or "clean up" and thought I'd find an empty seat at someones table. To my delight, friends from the RV Park said they would join me. Wow!! ~~ I didn't go to a lot of expense; I used my mismatched Corelle dinner plates (acquired over the years from Thrift Shops). Lord knows how long I've had an unopened package of paper napkins, and the plastic cups!! I searched my apartment for "Fall" decorations. Other than Trader Joe's awesome fresh cranberry sauce, and croissant rolls, my only expense was a delicious-smelling pumpkin-spice candle. ~~ It was such an enjoyable experience!! Praise the Lord!!

Postscript, Sat. Nov. 26th, 2011, 1:30 PM: I've been trying (for two days) to upload the pictures from Thanksgiving dinner. Sometimes it takes over six hours to upload one picture--and then it isn't a usable image (example to our left)!! I've tried everything (everything!!) imaginable and have isolated the problem to my Internet provider (Windstream). I pay about $70. per month for phone and Internet. I rarely make or receive a phone call so all that money for limited benefits!! FYI: It isn't overloaded daytime traffic via Windstream; the same horrible extended period of time when I try to upload at midnight!! (I know it is Windstream because I went to Panera [with free WiFi] and could upload a picture in about three minutes.)

A wild turkey: Not at one of my eight bird feeders but in a nearby tree. I love the view from my leisure chair, out the patio doors. Most of the leaves are off the trees so I see squirrels moving from tree to tree; cardinals perched on limbs. Then, to my surprise, I see the big bird sitting in a nearby tree. So, a bit early, but my opportunity to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Mixed Bean Vegetarian Chili

I feel like I am finally on the highway to health (renewed health)!! I spent the entire morning (until this very minute: 1:11) in the kitchen preparing my delicious Vegetarian Chili. The weather has turned cooler ('tis the season) so I fondly thought of my recipe for (repeat) Vegetarian Chili. I put the variety of beans to soak on Friday. (Tip: Soak your beans for a day, or two, and change the water frequently. Result: No gas!!) Yesterday I shopped for the extra ingredients: Red, and green, bell peppers, onions, garlic, canned diced tomatoes, and canned chopped green chilies, etc. This morning I started cooking the beans in (good) filtered water while I cut up the peppers, onions & garlic. ~~ It has been, conservatively, twenty months since I last prepared this (one of my favorite recipes) so I put a lot of love into the preparation. Two things differed this time: I did not unpack, and use, my Cuisinart food processor and I did not unpack, and use, my Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker. (Where would I put them after I unpacked them??) Confession: The finished product (although very good) lacks the unique flavor when the ingredients are pressure cooked. In my humble opinion, the taste is exquisite when prepared according to the original recipe. Try it?!?!

Mixed Bean Vegetarian Chili ~~ Servings: 8-10

1 red bell pepper
1 green bell pepper
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 medium onions, chopped
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely minced, or more to taste, optional. (None this time but on previous occasions I've only used one-half jalapeno pepper.)
1 can (4 oz.) chopped mild green chilies. (I've used a 7 oz. can and was OK.)
4 cloves garlic, minced
Leaves from 1 bunch fresh parsley, chopped
3 cans (15 oz. each) pinto, kidney, and/or black beans, rinsed and drained. (I always use dry beans, not canned.)
1 can (28 oz.) crushed tomatoes
4 teaspoon salt (I don't use salt. I think it has enough flavor w/o salt.)
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon dried oregano
2 teaspoons chili power (I only use one teaspoon.)
2 cups water (As mentioned above, I used filtered water, not tap water.)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

Cut bell peppers into roughly one-half inch squares. Heat oil in the pressure cooker over medium heat and saute onions until softened. Add bell peppers, jalapeno, green chilies, garlic, chopped parsley and beans. Coarsely chop tomatoes and add to mixture with salt, cumin, oregano, chili powder and water. Seal cooker, bring up to high pressure, reduce heat to stabilize pressure and cook for 15 minutes. (I found that 12 minutes was fine.) Remove cooker from heat and release pressure. Add chopped cilantro, taste and adjust seasonings.

Variation: Meaty Three Bean Chili
Brown 1 pound ground beef or turkey and add to cooked beans.

Note: These recipes make large batches of chili. Do not exceed your pressure cooker's capacity, reduce the recipes if necessary.

Lorraine comment: I usually use 1 cup each, dry, soaked overnight, pinto, kidney and black beans (nice variety of color). I see in my notes that (on one occasion) I used one cup Pinto, one-half cup Kidney, one-half cup Black, one-half cup Great Northern, and one-half cup Soy beans.) ~~ I've been making this recipe for almost a decade (since December 17, 2001). Suggestion: Please take the time to prepare dry beans rather than canned; the flavor is better and you've saved money!! ~~ I doubled the recipe, using a very large kettle. I'm sharing with some of my friends in the RV Park who frequently invite me to dine with them. ~~ I'll freeze most in small containers for a later day.

It's a gloomy day outside but very pleasant inside with beautiful Christian music and delicious smell throughout the apartment. Lots of Cardinals feeding on sunflower seeds just outside the living room--for my viewing pleasure.

I'm celebrating my one year anniversary with Wycliffe. Read my blog regarding arrival at the lovely RV Park in Orlando (11/12/10). ~~ Yesterday was a special day--at JAARS--as "we" celebrated end-of-year recognition of completed Bible translations, appreciation to many individuals who served for 20, 30, 40, or 50 years, and--specifically--a day of prayer. It was very inspirational and I felt my Heavenly Father used the occasion to affirm me that I'm using my time, and talents, appropriately.

If you have followed my blog, you know I have enjoyed a unique year. Furthermore, it's extremely unique to publish the anniversary blog on 11/11/11. ~~ More importantly (hear ye, hear ye!!), this is the First Annual Global Day of Worship. Join the celebration.

Pandora's Box

Actually, Pandora's boxes!! They are a nightmare for me!! (In frustration, I'm pulling my hair!!) I spent three days unpacking and inventorying collector's plates (on a beautiful weekend when I should have been outdoors). I also advertised over eleven boxes of holistic health and nutrition books (free). People are contacting me with questions like "Do you have any vegetarian cook books?" ABSOLUTELY!! Three boxes of "healthy" cook books!! (Those are in addition to the "over eleven boxes....") So I unpacked two boxes and began to list them by name and author. Yipes, where do I put them now that they are out of the box?? More clutter!! ~~ Please pray for me!!

Postscript: Yes, I can put them back in the box with the spine(s) displayed!! I can set the boxes up like a bookcase!!

Whatcha been doin' ?

I've shared with you--from time to time--that I am depressed by the clutter in my apartment. Furthermore, sporadically, I work on separating myself from cherished items and memorabilia. Friday, and Saturday, was spent shuffling boxes around so I could get to three large containers of Collector's Plates. First: "the shuffle"; second: inventory and isolation by series or theme. Third: check the web--and eBay--for current value; fourth: list the items "for sale" on a web link. Oh, so time-consuming!!!! I know there is limited interest in thirty-five year old Bicentennial and Rockwell plates. But (give me a gold star for effort) I have taken a giant step toward downsizing. Today, I must!! organize (and clean) the apartment so it is "presentable" for potential visitor-buyers. ~~ Bye; gotta go!!

Nightmare on Friendship Circle !!

Quite honestly, I want to return to that simple lifestyle in the tiny T@B trailer. I needed so few things: A couple of small utensils to heat a can of soup (I mainly enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables); a small wardrobe of "wash & wear" garments; one or two excellent books (ie: the Bible); my laptop computer (with a good WiFi connection), etc., etc. I'm so frustrated by the amount of memorabilia I've moved from California to Ohio, to Shelby, NC, to a PODS, and finally to Waxhaw, NC. Look closely at the description on many of the boxes: David, Stephen, Thom, Pearl Marie, Justin, (names of sons and grandchildren). Will they ever see the things I have lovingly packed for them? Do they even care??

The first few pictures show the unpacked, inventoried, isolated collector's plates (ready for a potential buyer). But I have many more projects waiting my attention in the numerous other boxes. See the dozens of boxes along one wall?! Then I turned and took a picture of the boxes of health and nutrition books (ready for a potential buyer). To the right of the health books, a picture of the corner--and we are full circle back to the collector's plates.

Believe it or not, I've made progress during the four-and-one-half months I've lived in the apartment on Friendship Circle. I've sold some things, given some, and donated many bags, and boxes, of items to Thrift Shops. I've purged my jewelry box for gifts for women at the crisis pregnancy center. I've divested myself of small items that are appropriate for shoe box gifts for Operation Christmas Child. Is it any wonder that I often write that I wish my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, would call me home to Heaven??

Postscript, 2:30 PM, Sun. 11/06/11: It is a beautiful afternoon (64 degrees)!! I have the doors open. I ventured outside for a few brief moments to sweep the patio (leaves, sunflower seeds hulls, etc.). I've taken pictures of numerous things advertised for sale, uploaded them from the camera, and forwarded... to people who wrote expressing interest. I haven't begun the "house cleaning" process yet.

Get smart!! No, not the TV show of decades past!! This old lady went to Napa Auto Supply for tongs to lift the battery from the box on the tongue of the T@B. From another T@B owner, I was encouraged to remove the battery for the winter. It goes without saying, too heavy for me to struggle with without a "helper." ~~~~ When I went to the trailer, and took off the plastic covers, I discovered the battery had a handle (something I had never noticed!!). I also removed the tiny battery that came with the T@B (unused since August 6, 2010, but still inside the orange storage). I took pictures before loading the batteries into the KIA. ~~~~ Well... I'm not so smart because I chipped some paint off the tongs (in the process of picture taking) so can't return them. ~~~~ I didn't have my Wheaties this morning so it was an effort to carry the heavy battery (LOL!!). ~~~~ I wish I could share this beautiful afternoon with my family and friends in the Northeast!! (Fifty-nine degrees at 4 o'clock.)

Profusely counting my blessings!! Moments ago, I watched the weather segments (on TV) regarding the epic early winter snow in the northeast. Two-point-nine (2.9) inches of snow in Central Park, New York, and more snow depth further North. Sixty million people affected by power outages. How miserable for thousands (millions) of people!! ~~ Our weather is cooler than normal; we had freezing temperatures overnight. I still have frost glistening on the grass in the yard (beyond my bird & squirrel feeders). Honestly, this morning (after I got up) I turned the heater on for the very first time!! The local TV weather-woman just announced it is currently 32 degrees.

An RV neighbor, and his son, helped maneuver the car cover over the top of the T@B. Then (a day later) I tried to anchor the cover with Bungee cords. For all of our labor--and good intentions--I suspect the first strong wind will rip the cover off and it will sail--like a kite--to an unknown location.

Postscript: A week earlier the KIA was thoroughly retailed by two young entrepreneurs, and looks beautiful!! A few days earlier, the KIA turned 62,000 miles. FYI: I'm paying fifty cents a day to "store" the T@B in the RV Park while I live in a nearby apartment.

The trip to Elkhart, Indiana, was experienced with my Little Guy Teardrop travel trailer. On that trip, I saw---and purchased---the T@B. Little Guy was left with Sullivan RV (Decatur, Indiana) on consignment. (Sullivan was a former T@B trailer distributor. They were very gracious to this teardrop trailer traveler!!) The events that follow were enjoyed while traveling with my newly acquired 2004 T@B.

The first three pictures were taken AFTER a drenching rain. Five pictures of our potluck supper under an improvised shelter. Last pic shows weak sunshine less than one hour after sheets of water dripping from the roof. ~~ At Concord, North Carolina--only forty-three miles from JAARS--it was my first camp out in almost a year.

That crafty little critter got to a bird feeder hanging from the eave of the roof. Furthermore, he got beyond the "baffle" and was feasting on sunflower seeds in another bird feeder. Too bad I don't have the acrobatics on video. The raccoons, however, are delighted with the squirrel food!!

A strange change of topic: Long term memories. ~~ Bob Hope is associated with the song "Thanks for the memories."

In a recent exchange of e-mail messages, I told a friend that something I saw on television jogged a memory from six decades ago. This is what I wrote: I have been praising the Lord (over the years) for a good memory. Yesterday (last night) I caught a program (Antiques Road Show) and one piece of memorabilia was tied to Jack Dempsey. My mind flashed back sixty years to LaPine, Oregon, where a next door neighbor lived and he had been a "sparring partner" of Jack Dempsey. I haven't thought of them for six decades. First, I remembered their last name "Powell," then I recalled "Everett" and seconds later "Hattie." I was so shocked that the information was still in the computer memory bank of my mind.

Quoting from Psalm 139:14, 17: "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.... How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them!"

Notice the two new black, steel, "baffles" to stop the squirrel(s) from reaching the bird feeders. Purchased, and installed, yesterday, this was my first opportunity to observe and photograph the attempt.... Moments earlier, I watched the squirrel climb up the brick wall planning to get to the big feeder (like September 1st) but the feeder had been moved back to the Shepherd's hook. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." He kept trying..., I kept trying...!! And the winner is...??

I have no idea how the squirrel got up to the bird feeder hanging from the eave. I believed the large feeders were safe after I moved them from the Shepherd's Hooks to the eave of the roof. I was shocked when I saw him five feet from the ground!! Squirrel-friend let me get close, gave me a big grin, and said (again) "I'm the boss." ~~~ From the balcony, a Cardinal chirps. From the sidelines, a bunny wonders if he can join the show.

Granted, the pictures are not very good (too dark). 1) The scene is back-lit; 2) I couldn't use flash because some (most) of the pictures have the glass patio door between me and the "performers."

Squirrel acrobatics; is he ready for the Olympics?? The dome is designed to deter the squirrel from raiding the bird feeder.

Postscript, Tuesday, August 30th, 2011: The squirrel is (or squirrels are) very undisciplined!! I came home from work and found the plastic dome---broken---on the ground. I've been good to those little critters and this is the way they say "thanks"?!?!

I just watched Yeltl on TV. It has been twenty-eight years since I saw the film in a movie theater in Pasadena, California (with my son and daughter-in-law). I loved the movie THEN and I've loved remembering it through the years!! It was a joy to revisit such a poignant illustration of one woman's faith in God. I'd like to "wax eloquent" about passionate love for God but too few people want to hear (or read) such words.

While I am in my apartment, I usually listen to the CD player with songs and music by an old acquaintance (from thirty-plus years ago): Marty Goetz. He plays the piano and sings scripture. It is such a comfort!! ~~ At work, I have Family Radio quietly playing from the computer. Very conservative Christian music and rock-solid Biblical teaching!! (I can't listen [at home] on my laptop computer because the speakers ceased to function, and extension speakers don't work either.)

In the wind, I replaced the bird feeders with wind chimes. (I had over a dozen wind chimes when I lived in Lancaster, California. It was a symphony of sweet music!! Rarely any wind here--near Lancaster, South Carolina.) I brought the bird feeders, and plant, indoors so they wouldn't sway in a heavy wind. A squirrel-friend came looking for his food. ~~ No heavy winds, no rain, here although hurricane Irene came on-shore along the coast of North Carolina at approximately 7:30 AM (approximately 200 miles east of Waxhaw).

I'm amused because "an old crow" was a recent visitor. One old crow visiting another old crow?? Yes, the big black bird was feasting on seeds on the ground near the feeders. The menagerie is growing: Five squirrels, five raccoons, one crow--and a long list of small birds.

5.9 earthquake rocks Virginia, East Coast

Did you feel it?? I did!! I was sitting at my computer and had the thought "That feels like an earthquake." Most of my life, I lived in Southern California. I'm very familiar with the "feel" of an earthquake!! It was confirmed as I drove to the market and heard about the quake on the radio.

"Historic event" according to the evening news. Furthermore, according to the news media, it has been 110 years since the last earthquake on the East Coast. That's not accurate because I experienced an earthquake last year while visiting Vermont.

I've never experienced a hurricane but that may change in a few days. Hurricane Irene is blowing toward the Carolina's.

It was entirely out of character (for me) when I stormed out of K-Mart empty-handed. I arrived at the check-out with six small sale items. They were boldly marked with red discount-price stickers but the clerk scanned them and charged me full price. "I beg your pardon!! $3.50 times 2 equals $7.00; $4.00 times 2 equals $8.00; $2.50 times 2 equals $5.00 for a total of $20.00. How dare you tell me that I owe you $32.00!!" ~~ Ever wonder how often we are overcharged?

Christmas Shoe Boxes for Samaritan's Purse

It's that time of year: Time to start preparing shoe boxes for Samaritan's Purse. I was shopping--at K-Mart--for small items. Prior to that, I was shopping in a Christian Thrift Shop for suitable things.

No, I wasn't buying for myself!! In fact, I'm making progress "downsizing." I delivered five boxes of much miscellaneous to the Christian Thrift Shop.

This past weekend I sent several boxes of audio tapes, and VHS tapes, to new locations. It had been suggested that the local prison could use the audio tapes of great sermons, and Bible studies. ~~ A mother--with seven children--was delighted with a Banker's Box full of "G" movies (Little House on the Prairie, Christy, Long Long Journey, etc.). ~~ A chrome, 3-shelf, stand may resolve a widow's storage problem?! ~~ Other advertised things were never claimed. Maybe next week??

Back to the topic of Shoe Boxes: While "downsizing," I put jewelry aside for "girl" boxes. I have lots of costume jewelry I'll never wear. I have ribbons of various colors. Perhaps a little girl--in a foreign land--will be happy with her Christmas box.

I have a large box, and large tote bag, destined for the local crisis pregnancy center. I'm told the Center likes to pamper the girls with gifts. I'm sending cute stuffed animals, scarves, purses, "chunky" jewelry, toiletries, small CD player, etc.

Living "full time" in my tiny T@B travel trailer educated me in the art of survival with a minimum of "stuff." As time goes by, I plan to distribute most of the things previously stored (for sixteen months) in the PODS container. Confession: I have an affection for the things accumulated, spanning decades!! It "feels good" to donate audio tapes (of Lloyd Ogilvie sermons) to the prison. It "feels good" to share VHS tapes (some still in their original wrap) with someones grandchildren. (My grandchildren never came to visit.) It "feels good" to give stuffed animals that caught my attention in years past. It is easier to donate when I have a mental image of the destination. I'm not prepared (psychologically) to have a Goodwill, or Salvation Army, truck back up to the apartment and haul things away. That day may eventually arrive but not in August (or September) 2011. It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway), there are many things that I hoped to give my children and grandchildren. I have **LOTS** of memorabilia: Personal items that were cherished by my parents and grandparents. (My children and grandchildren ignore my frequent attempts at reconciliation.) ~~ At this date, an unresolved question: What will I do with all the boxes of family history?? What will I do with the thousands of pictures? ~~ (Oops!! I got off-topic; the latter has nothing to do with Shoe Boxes for Operation Christmas Child.)

During times of depression, I've often said "I'm hanging on by my fingernails." To my amusement, my squirrel-friend got into the bird feeder and he was "hanging on by his toenails." ~~ My holistic health remedy (small package) is helping but I'm still mildly depressed.

Two Sundays ago (August 7th) was advertised as International Forgiveness Day. I sent lovely "Forgiveness" e-cards to my sons with a heartfelt plea for forgiveness and reconciliation. I haven't heard from them. Ergo, my depression. ~~ I find some comfort in the words of Mother Teresa. (And I love watching the birds and the squirrels!!)

Squirrel-friend wasn't content with the food in his specific feeder. He had to go for the sunflower seeds in the bird feeder. The birds weren't happy; they flew around chirping at the squirrel!! After I took several pictures (long distance), I told the squirrel to "go." He departed briefly but returned and you can see him climbing the slender wrought iron pole. He was not intimidated by me as I approached him and the last few pictures are without telephoto. I could have reached out and touched him!! I nudged him with my camera and quietly told him "This feeder is for the birds; go back to your feeder." I hung the white plastic chain thinking it might discourage him from climbing the wrought iron pole. That didn't work and he came back for more sunflower seeds. Isn't he cute?? ~~ Recently, I had four raccoons feeding on watermelon rind and old bread--on my patio. (The picture is "grainy" because taken through the screen door and later cropped.) ~~ Click each picture to enlarge it for better details.

I heard that question! The answer: Eight bird feeders with a wide variety of treats, one hummingbird feeder (rarely visited), one combination fresh water dispenser and bird-bath. Two squirrel feeders. ~~ The investment was modest; the enjoyment is enormous!!

I went shopping this afternoon and bought a plastic dome advertised to stop squirrels from invading the bird feeders. See for yourself: He was in a precarious position (closeup picture #5) but he was getting the sunflower seeds!! I clapped my hands and sent him on his way. He sat a few yards away and chattered his disapproval!! My thought had been: The shield and the noise of dangling wind chimes would stop him. It just made sense to me that his movement (up the pole) would vibrate the wind chimes and the sound would frighten him. The little thief did not return before dark so I'll have to wait to see if my makeshift deterrent works. ~~ Ignore the time stamp. I actually prepared this about 8:20 PM but wanted it to follow today's previous blogs. ~~ Watermelon rinds (for the raccoons) bottom corner of next to last picture.

Postscript, 8/22/11: At 5:30 AM the wind chimes awaken me. A raccoon was climbing the pole!! ~~ No argument: Sunflower seeds are very desirable!!

LORRAINE IS THE BOSS!! The "favorite food" bird feeders were moved to hooks from the eave of the roof--where squirrel-friend cannot get to them. I preferred those large feeders on the Shepherd's hooks but "a gals gotta do what a gals gotta do." My bird-friends are temporarily confused by the move but I think they will adjust to the transition. Songbird seeds, and suet, replaced fruit & seed mix, and sunflower seeds on the wrought iron Shepherd's hooks. (Ignore the date stamp; actually published Monday, Aug. 22, 2011.)

Postscript, Monday August 22, 2011, 5:00 PM: I haven't been able to photograph the frustration of friend-squirrel. He looks up at the bird feeders; he paces along the wall and patio glass doors looking for something to climb on. He even stood on his hind legs, close to the patio door, begging me to resolve his dilemma ("S'il vous plait"). At this moment he is on his little squirrel-feeder chair eating corn. He knows how to lift the lid of the feeder. For awhile, he would lift each time for a kernel of corn. Then his tail began to twitch and I sensed his frustration. He butted his head against the lid so it is standing wide open. See pictures of similar behavior. I'm positive he can see me in my living room, sometimes in my leisure chair, sometimes at my computer. I think he is a God-given gift to entertain this too-depressed-to-go-to-work old lady!! I wish getting rid of depression was as easy as stopping the squirrel from raiding the bird feeders!! ~~ 5:40 PM and I have three squirrels on the patio!! ~~ 6:10 PM, and then there were four!! ~~ 8:00 PM and one little "pig" is still monopolizing the feeder!! ~~ 8:20 PM (not even dark) and the raccoons are here for watermelon rind and stale bagels.

Postscript, Tuesday August 23, 2011: To my amazement, last night a raccoon climbed the wrought iron Shepherd's hook and stole the brick of suet!! Imagine the dexterity of climbing the pole and opening the door of the feeder!! Now I have wind chimes hanging from that hook.

Remember the old saying "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again"? Tonight (Tuesday, August 23, 2011) the squirrel climbed the screen door in an effort to reach the bird feeders with the sunflower seeds. We have to admire his persistence!!

I believe I heard him say:

"Madam, je ne comprends pas."

He doesn't understand why the lady of the house is so nasty (méchant).

JAARS Day, Waxhaw, North Carolina

First of all, a praise report. After sweltering heat for many weeks (in the 90's to 100) we heard it would be 88 to 89 degrees today. Then the weather forecasters revised their reports to tell us we'd have rain showers off and on all day. The rain held off until 7:47 PM. ~~ Personally, I loved the better weather and enjoyed the walk from location to location. (Should have had my pedometer!!) ~~ I took dozens of pictures (and it has taken hours to upload them). If you click on each individual picture, it will enlarge for better details. Enjoy!! ~~ After two hours of moderate rain, frequent lightening and thunder, the storm moved out of the area. ~~ Hallelujah, no rain on our festivities!!

Four times a year, there is an enormous "open house" at the JAARS center. This was my first JAARS Day and I elected to see it as an ordinary visitor. "Yes," I could have worked at reception, or a display, but it seemed important (to me) to experience everything so I can discuss it with first-hand knowledge. ~~ If you click on each individual picture, it will enlarge for better details. Will we ever experience relief from the heat? Will I eventually find the energy to complete the innumerable projects that surround me (in the apartment)?? ~~ I did two loads of laundry (at the RV Park) early this morning--and did necessary tasks around the T@B. ~~~ According to the weather forecasters, a high of 100 degrees (in the Charlotte area) will break the record (for this day) set in 1888. My thermometer--in the shade, on the patio--tells an even hotter story!!

Why are there no Cardinals at my bird feeders ??

I see numerous Cardinals on the branches of the nearby trees but they haven't approached my bird feeders yet. (But a Hummingbird on the feeder as I type this!!) I will do some research (at Google & Ask.com) to find an answer. Meanwhile, here is a cute story about a Cardinal.

Watching the squirrels--and the birds--did not cure my malaise (spelled d-e-p-r-e-s-s-i-o-n). I went shopping today--to Earth Fare--for a non-prescription remedy for depression. ~~ Spending so much time cooped-up in air-conditioned buildings has taken a toll on me (I hate A/C). ~~ FYI: I bolted the squirrel feeder to the little wrought-iron chair and created the little white "ladder" to encourage climbing to the feeder. At night, I move the little squirrel feeder chair indoors because I now want to discourage the raccoons that arrived in the middle of the night to feed on the "critter food." ~~ I request your prayers because I despise being a lazy old lady languishing in the easy chair!! (Perhaps "malaise" is the wrong description?! Let's just say depression.)

You're able to read about my T@B travels this time last year. The most exciting event in my life, right now, is bird watching. It is so relaxing to sit in my easy chair and watch a variety of birds. I've also had a frequent squirrel visitor. Two nights, a raccoon awaken me rattling a pet food dish which previously held "critter food."

Footnote: Of the smorgasbord, sunflower seeds are the most popular.

Obituary in the London Times

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Drinking green smoothies

I haven't unpacked my Vitamix yet but I think that will occur within hours (or days). In the article about the magic of green smoothies I got a "wake up" call. "Duh!!, Lorraine, pay attention to #7." I have such an absence of energy!! Time to start making green smoothies again!! Yes, again. I was faithful... until I packed up and went on-the-road. No room for the Vitamix in the T@B. ~~ I'm so tired of my lack of energy!! There are so many things to accomplish and I waste too much time!!

If you Google recipe green smoothies you'll find lots of suggestions. Here is one of my favorite author's web link. ~~ With more energy, I can unpack my boxes with books regarding health and nutrition.

Some of my faithful readers may say "Lorraine, your messages are 'all over the map' lately. In alphabetical order: bird feeders, deficit spending, fatigue, green smoothies, heart health, home phone service, last year's travel experiences, etc., etc." ~~ In all honesty: I'm trying to get my equilibrium after the "let down" of May 21st (a brief two months ago). I really, really believed that was the day of the Rapture. (Laugh if you like but I really was convinced.) I spent months living for that glorious occasion!! Since May 21st, I've moved from "the known to the unknown." I left Wycliffe Associates in Orlando searching for some relief from the heat. I stopped to visit JAARS--part of the Wycliffe family of missionary organizations. Volunteer opportunities beckoned, an available apartment, delivery of the PODS. So many decisions to make!! And the oppressive heat!! Furthermore, I haven't wanted to admit it (here) but I've been depressed. Number 1, 2, & 3 of the attached article may be my reward for returning to green smoothies.

Bird watching !!

Two feeders weren't enough!! Yesterday I bought two more feeders, a bird bath, and the wrought-iron 3-hook display. I'm not only attracting birds, I have a frequent squirrel. Furthermore, I have wasps, or bees, around the hummingbird feeder. So I spent a lot of time on Ask.com reading about how to combat the problem of bees. ~~ It is so relaxing to sit and watch the birds!! It is a new experience for me.
