Tennessee
I took the picture of the Tennessee state line sign at 10:45 AM, Tuesday, October 6th. The Interstate is deceivingly empty. I had to wait so I didn't have a stream of traffic!! ~~ Next stop, at 12:05, at Museum of Appalachia. I limited myself to taking pictures from the parking lot because I balked at paying the admission fee. I browsed the quaint store, gift shop, and peeked in to the restaurant.
Museum of Appalachia, Clinton, TN
An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, described as "an American treasure" that "stands alone as a tribute to the American spirit," this living history museum is an adventure into pioneer and frontier life on a 65-acre working rural farm. Visit animals and gardens; view 30 original cabins and buildings and over 250,000 artifacts.
An annual sheep shearing happens in the spring. Demonstrators are on hand to walk you through the process of taking wool from the sheep to the actual garments and quilts made from it. The Museum celebrates a Tennessee Fall Homecoming on the second full weekend of October. The Homecoming, stocked with great talent, is one of the nation’s largest and most authentic old-time music, craft and folk festivals. The Fourth of July Anvil Shoot and celebration hearkens colonial ceremonies, with a replica of the Liberty Bell ringing precisely at 2 pm in conjunction with the National Bell Ringing Ceremony. Folks can sample old-time favorites like sassafras tea and fried apple pies. Mountain skills are demonstrated for visitors that range from broom-making to crosscut sawing, along with bountiful music making.
Take a piece of Appalachian culture home with you from the large gift and craft shop. Mouth-watering home-cooked lunches served daily.
Directions: I-75 Exit 122 (Norris/Clinton), then E 1 mi. on Hwy. 61 (15 miles N of Knoxville).
